Three-Way Tie Surfaces After HAMMOND, Ind., June 29, 2008 – Second-round play of the Horseshoe Casino Classic at Lost Marsh Golf Course was completed Sunday morning after darkness suspended the remainder of the second round on Saturday. The leaderboard shuffled again as a three-way tie for the lead developed between Sarah-Jane Kenyon (73) of Queensland, Australia, Jin Young Pak (73) of Kang Leung, South Korea, and Song Yi Choi (72) of Seoul, South Korea at even par through two rounds of play. Play resumed at 7:02 a.m. with eight groups left on the course. Bundled up in raingear, players resumed their round in a light drizzle as temperatures dipped into the mid-60s. Kenyon held a one-stroke lead through 16 holes at one-under par when play was called on Saturday at 8:23 p.m. Recently engaged on Friday at Chicago’s Navy Pier, Kenyon was the only player with an under-par score in the tournament when play was stopped. “I woke up at 4:50 a.m. this morning, but I felt good and was hitting the ball well through the last three holes,” said Kenyon, currently sixth on the Tour season money list. “I’m disappointed with my three-putt, but I’ll go out there and give it my best shot and see what happens.” Kenyon three-putted her last hole to close her round with a disappointing bogey and finished with a round of 1-over-par 73. Pak, a 2005 Tour champion, finished her back nine with two birdies, overcoming a pair of double-bogeys in her first nine holes. Currently seventh in the season money list, Choi was able to complete her round before play was halted, coming off the course with an even-par 72. She is seeking her first professional win. Seventy-one players made the 36-hole cut at 10-over-par 154. Final-round play will start from the first and 10th tees at 9 a.m. The leaders will tee off at 10:50 a.m. For real-time scoring and more information, visit www.duramedfuturestour.com. Sarah-Jane Kenyon Emerges As Leader HAMMOND, Ind., June 28, 2008 – Sarah-Jane Kenyon of Queensland, Australia, finished 16 holes at even par to take the lead before darkness suspended second-round play of the Horseshoe Casino Classic at Lost Marsh Golf Course on Saturday. Kenyon leads the field at one-under par through 34 holes. Song Yi Choi of Seoul, South Korea, completed her round at even-par 72 to move into second. First-day leaders Lisa Ferrero of Lodi, Calif., and Taya Battistella of Portland, Ore., made it through 13 holes, playing at 4-over par and in a tie for third. Kenyon is the only player in the field currently with an under-par score. The non-exempt LPGA Tour player started her day in 10th place, but overcame back-to-back bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes with birdies on her first and 12th holes. “It was pretty tough out there with a lot of tricky shots,” said Kenyon, whose last Duramed FUTURES Tour win came in 2005. “I have a great caddie and it worked out really well.” Following a 27-minute delay in Friday’s first round, players once again faced winds on Saturday in excess of 30 mph during the morning tee times. Airhorns sounded at 4:46 p.m. as skies darkened over the horizon and winds picked up to precede the Tour’s seventh weather delay of the season. As players were shuttled off the course, 60 mph winds were recorded, followed by small amounts of hail. Play resumed at 6:18 p.m. Strong winds picked up again and temperatures dipped down into the low 70s. Darkness suspended the remainder of the second round at 8:23 p.m. Second-round play will continue 7 a.m. Sunday morning. Following the 36-hole cut, final-round play will start off the first and 10th tees with a projected starting time around 9 a.m. For real-time scoring and more information, visit www.duramedfuturestour.com. Kostina, Kang Ace 17th Hole The Duramed FUTURES Tour’s hole-in-one drought is over after Haeji Kang of Seoul, South Korea, and Anastasia Kostina of Nakhabino, Russia, made aces on the 130-yard, 17th hole. Just four groups apart from each other in the morning tee times, Kang and Kostina scored the Tour’s seventh and eighth aces of the year. Both players will receive $500 as part of Duramed’s Hole-In-One Challenge promotion. They marked the first holes-in-one on Tour since Gina Umeck of Redlands, Calif., posted an ace in the final round of the Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City Championship in Leawood, Kan., May 18th -- a span of 12 rounds. Five aces were recorded by Tour players in the 2007 season. For Kang, it marked her first hole-in-one in tournament play. She used a 9-iron from 117 yards out uphill into the wind going left. It was her second career ace, the first coming in a practice round two years ago in Queensland, Australia. “I aimed at the right edge of the green and I felt really good about the shot,” Kang said. “I didn’t know I made it until I reached the green.” It was also Kostina’s first hole-in-one in competitive play. The Russian used a pitching wedge from 115 yards away and wasn’t aware of the result until a spectator told her it flew in the hole. “I was trying to hit a knockdown shot, but I hit it a little fat and short of the hole,” Kostina said. Kostina recorded her other career ace in last year’s pro-am tournament in Leawood, Kan. Mathis, Kang Lead Morning Play with 3-Under-Par 69s Amanda Mathis of Opelousas, La., and Haeji Kang led morning play, battling wind to post rounds of 3-under-par 69. After the second round was suspended, Kang and Mathis only trailed Song Yi Choi among players who completed their round. Mathis, who began the day tied for 92nd, posted four birdies through 17 holes before ending with a bogey on No. 18. She moved up into a tie for ninth after rounds of 77-69=146 (+2) and continued a turnaround after missing the 18-hole cut at last year’s United States Steel Classic in Hammond, Ind., by shooting an 87 in her first round. “I hit the same amount of greens and fairways as yesterday,” Mathis said. “I was really bummed after I shot a 77 yesterday, but I really went out today playing with nothing to lose.” Kang scattered five birdies and a hole-in-one before making a double-bogey on the 14th hole and ending her round with a bogey to finish at 3-under-par 69. The Tour rookie moved up to a third-place tie after starting the day in a tie for 77th. Weather: Mostly sunny throughout the morning with temperatures reaching 80 degrees and winds blowing 20-25 mph. Isolated thunderstorms developing in the afternoon, some possibly severe, with winds up to 60 mph and potential hail. Contact: Ben Schlesselman, 386-274-6228, Ben@duramedfuturestour.com. |
