Angela Park Holds Share of Second at U.S. Women’s Open
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C., June 30, 2007 Recent Duramed FUTURES Tour graduate Angela Park maintains a share of second place in the 62nd U.S. Women’s Open Championship after the completion today of the storm-plagued second round at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club. Players were finally able to play a storm-free day, but the third round was suspended for darkness at 8:05 p.m. EDT, and will resume Sunday at 7:30 a.m.
Park carded rounds of 68-69 to drop into a tie for second at 137 with two other Duramed FUTURES Tour alums, Cristie Kerr of Miami and Lorena Ochoa of Guadalajara, Mexico. All are at a total of four-under par for the championship. Korean teen Jiyai Shin holds a one-shot lead at five under.
Park did not play golf at all on Friday, which was suspended after early afternoon storms rolled in and canceled the play. But the player from Torrance, Calif., said it was “a lot about patience and getting ready for today.”
“When they told us that [Friday’s round] was cancelled for the whole day, I thought that it could have a positive effect on my game because then I could rest up for the next day and get ready for it,” said Park, 18, who was born in Brazil and who finished eighth on the 2006 Duramed FUTURES Tour money list.
Park finished strong today in the completion of the second round, sinking a 12-footer to save par on the 17th hole, then holing a 22-foot birdie on the final hole. The 36-hole tournament cut came at 148 (+6), with 67 players making the cut.
