Triple Threat: Ochoa Wins Hat Trick In 2006 LPGA Season
Mexico's Lorena Ochoa won the LPGA's triple crown this season, finishing 2006 as the LPGA's Rolex Player of the Year, Vare Trophy winner (for the lowest scoring average), and the Tour's top money winner. The native of Guadalajara, who earned her LPGA Tour card on the Duramed FUTURES Tour in 2002, won six tournaments this season and finished first on the LPGA's 2006 ADT money list with earnings of more than $2.59 million. "It's been a great season," said Ochoa, 25, who won each of the three categories for the first time in her career. "Just to win the Vare Trophy, the Rolex Player of the Year award and the ADT Official Money List title has been a dream season. It has been a very consistent year for me." Ochoa posted the LPGA's fourth-best scoring average in the history of the Tour at 69.2360 -- falling in line behind Annika Sorenstam, who holds the previous records. Ochoa edged the Swede this year by .5849 strokes. The Mexican star carded 20 rounds at 66 or better at 16 different golf courses. She also posted another milestone, recording 46 of 89 rounds in the 60s, and 62 of 89 rounds under par this season. The 2002 Duramed FUTURES Tour's Player of the Year, who was the LPGA's 2003 Rookie of the Year, led the LPGA this season in greens in regulation (75.5 percent) and recorded more birdies (395) and eagles (15) than any other player, while averaging 1.75 putts per round. In addition to her six wins, Ochoa also finished as runner-up six times and posted two third-place finishes this season. For the year, she recorded 20 top-10 finishes in 25 events. And she became only the second LPGA Tour player (following Sorenstam) to earn more than $2 million in a season. Fellow FUTURES alum Karrie Webb of Australia eventually joined Ochoa in the $2-plus million per season circle at the Mizuno Classic. Ochoa currently owns nine career LPGA Tour titles and is the first player from Mexico to win the Vare Trophy title. She also is the 12th consecutive international player to win the award. |
